Lucy Wortham James is our town’s benefactress.  Her Great Grandfather founded Maramec Iron Works, a business that eventually lead to the birth of our town.  She has protected her family’s land by keeping it private, but opening it up to the public for their enjoyment – Maramec Spring Park.  She created the James Foundation in our town.  They are responsible for our park, pool, town cemetery, and library.  She even gave out town the land that our school is built on.  That’s why our elementary school is named after her.
Lucy Wortham James was a very generous lady!

How does your town commemorate this famous Missourian?

Maramec Spring holds Old Iron Works Day each October to celebrate historical trades and crafts.  All six 4th grade classes read a biography of Lucy, participate in a walking tour, visit her gravesite, and celebrate her birthday.  We learn all about our town, how it began, and how generous Lucy was to not only our town, but to people all around the world.  She gave to many charities during her lifetime.
