Welcome to Parmley's Kennels Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers! The
Wheaten is an old breed originally from Ireland. It's history of working
family companion goes back over 200 years. Wheatens served
as steady, loyal companion; quick-witted hunter; and brave protector of
family and stock. This medium-sized beauty is a terrier through and
through with stamina, vibrant personality, and heartiness associated with
that group.
Today's Wheaten is being discovered by families looking for the "perfect"
all-round dog. Wheatens are the answer for most people who are searching
for a pet but suffer from allergies. They find the Wheaten to be
one of the most hypo-allergenic of all dog breeds. Another major
asset of the breed is their non-shedding, beautiful coats. Wheatens
are born dark and lighten as they age to their trademark wheaten shades
from cream to dark gold. A mature Wheaten's coat may be Irish or
the fuller American type. Grooming by most families consists of keeping
the coat in the natural state needing only thorough brushing. Some
families clip to the length that is most desirable to their tastes.
However this breed may also be groomed into the highly stylized scissored
trim.

The November, 2000, AKC Gazette quotes from the pamphlet, "Shake
Hands With the Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier" saying, "my requirements are
few . . . lots of love, a quiet corner of my own. . ." It continued,
"I am an elegant, long-legged terrier, the 'teddy-bear' soft cuddly dog
that children love to hug and the delightful companion with which both
men and women are comfortable. I love to be loved and feel equally
at home in either the city or the country. I am quite appealing in
my natural state but, if you want , you may trim me a bit to enhance my
rather dignified terrier appearance. Either way you'll be enchanted
with my 'happy-go-lucky' loving Irish nature!"

The article also claims "No smell, no shed, no yap!" also noting the
article in the November 1985 The New Yorker aimed at the "yuppie"
saying the Wheaten was the "in" dog for the 1990's. It also mentions
articles in W and Dog Fancy. Those articles chose the
Wheaten as one of the "best gifts for men" and one of the 50 "Hottest Breeds,"
respectively.

The article also cautions the prospective puppy owner questioning whether
breeders are being honest with people about genetic disease, temperament,
and negative traits of the breed. We urge everyone interested in
a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier to do their research thoroughly. This
breed is our favorite and should live a long and happy life up to 13-15
years; however, as with any live thing, illnesses do happen. Conscientious
breeders eliminate from their breeding program any dog that is found to
have a problem. Also, a guarantee agreeable to both the prospective family
and the breeder should be discussed during one of the first contacts with
any considered kennel.
